Description of Cleburne Homestead:
Welcome to Cleburne

Cleburne is an art hotel offering Bed and Breakfast accommodation in a Heritage-listed homestead, close to MONA - the Museum of Old and New Art (five minutes drive) and Hobart's Constitution Dock and Salamanca Place (twelve minutes drive).

We offer five suites – the Cottage, the Bakehouse, the Homestead, the Barn and the Stables. All rooms are eclectically furnished; bold, modern art and luxurious bedding contrast with raw 1820's stone and timber. Delicious breakfasts are served in the grand dining room or on the Homestead verandah.

The authentic Barn, Cottage and Homestead cluster round a tree-sheltered courtyard on four acres of grounds where peacocks stroll and alpacas graze.

Art
Cleburne is five minutes from MONA the exciting Museum of Old and New Art in Berriedale, and offers a complementary art experience. To read Juliana Engberg’s article about exciting new art venues in Hobart, recently published in The Monthly, go to: www.themonthly.com.au/tm/node/1336

We are serious about sharing our enthusiasm for modern Tasmanian and Australian art. Our modern art collection is on display in every room. Artists include Wayne Brooks, Helen Hopcroft, Marina Pribaz, John Lendis, Marisse Maas and Mandy Renard.

Heritage
Built in the 1830’s, Cleburne may be the earliest authentic Heritage accommodation in the Derwent Valley, and, indeed, in Tasmania. Our conversion, in cooperation with Heritage Tasmania, is a unique mix of new and old.

To learn more about the architecture and history of Cleburne (formerly Mount Direction Homestead) go to our Heritage page and read Warwick Oakman’s article.

We acknowledge Tasmanian Aborigines as the traditional owners of the land on which these buildings stand and honour the Mumirimina people who were killed at the Risdon Cove massacre in May 1804.

We are a certified member of GALTA.

We welcome families with children.

We accept pets by arrangement. We expect that your pets, dogs especially, will be under control and will not threaten our animals or fowl.

Approaching from Airport
Follow the signs to Hobart, and, as you approach the Tasman Bridge, take the right turn on B32 to Lindisfarne, Geilston Bay and Bridgewater. Stay on B32 to the roundabout (approx. seven kilometres). A small sign here will say Risdon Cove. Turn left and continue on B32 for two more kilometers and take B32 left to Old Beach and Bridgewater. After merging with traffic coming from your right, IMMEDIATELY position yourself to turn right into our drive which is only one hundred metres after the junction. If you find yourself going under the Bowen Bridge – you have gone too far!

Approaching from Launceston
Follow Highway One south to Hobart. At the Bridgewater roundabout, take B32/East Derwent Highway left to Bridgewater, Old Beach, Lindisfarne, etc. Keep the river to your right.
