Ask a local. Ask Peppers. And they'll tell you there's only one Bells Beach. But we'll show you two reef breaks near Torquay - Winkipop and South Side - That are better and less crowded.
An historical seaside resort, Torquay's wide grassy foreshores are lined with grand shady trees. At Easter time, you'll catch the world's best surfers competing at the infamous Bells Beach, just a few kilometres southwest of the old township, which is also the birthplace of iconic surf brands Rip Curl and Quiksilver.
Torquay is also the official start of one of Australia's most spectacular coastal drives. The Great Ocean Road meanders for 200 kilometres through the breathtaking Otway Ranges and via the Shipwreck Coast, before paying homage to the hallowed Twelve Apostles. If you dare tackle the terrain by foot, the Surf Coast and Deep Creek walking trails will entice your pioneering spirit towards Torquay's rugged beaches and rocky cliffs.
