| City spends in Tourist Destinations |
Melbourne scooped the pool on getting tourists to spend more to visit their city but Sydney was the tourist destination where visitors spent the most amount of money once they arrived.
Latest figures released by Tourism Research Australia indicated that tourists spent $4.53 billion getting to Melbourne by air, road or rail over the past year with most staying an average of three nights and spending about $239 per night.
Once the visitors arrived however they spent more in Sydney, dropping a total of $3.451 billion on arrival and again staying an average of three nights.
Melbourne attracted more dollars getting tourists into the city while Sydney ranked second in attracting visitors and the Gold Coast third and Brisbane fourth.
Further down the list was Adelaide (number 9 with tourists spending $1.53 billion to get there and spending an average of four nights and the Whitsundays (number 20 with tourists spending $551,000 to get there and spending an average of five nights).
The patterns of visitors has been documented in the latest National Visitors Survey for the year ending December 2007.
