| Massive fire sale at Whitsundays! |
There was a massive fire sale on the picturesque Whitsunday Island of Great Keppel this week as the new owners prepared to get rid of the old "get wrecked" image which has haunted the hideaway for several decades.
Hairdresser Steve Ackerie (Stefan) paid $15,000 for a white grand piano on the island while other auction goers snapped up everything from chairs and tables through to water skis and boats.
Great Keppel Island Resort will now close for a major rebuild by its new Sydney owners with talk that luxury homes will be included in the new redevelopment proposal.
Great Keppel has 17 sandy beaches and property insiders say it's the untouched real estate that offers the real value on the island.
After decades of enjoying a reputation as the ultimate honeymoon destinations and later family getaways complete with a collection of kids' clubs, many island resorts are now showing their age.
But as the continual turnover in island ownership (often at the hands of receivers) shows, running a profitable island is not easy.
Meanwhile, Hamilton Island, owned by wine king Sandy Oatley, has recently opened a new luxury resort targeting travellers prepared to pay $21,000 a week for a beach house in peak times.
