Queensland looks like getting a third international airport.
The state government is moving ahead with plans to develop a third gateway to the region in the picturesque Whitsundays, a project which will be worth at least $80 million.
Talk is the government will soon announce three groups on a short list which may be given the opportunity to construct the airport.
One of the leading consortiums is thought to be headed by Melbourne developer David Marriner and the Dutch-backed Brisbane Airport Corporation.
The site will be the redevelopment of the old Proserpine Airport, long in need of a serious makeover.
It's thought the government is keen to have the airport up and running within two years with services to Asia and New Zealand.
