| The 20th anniversary of the great World Expo 88 |
Brisbane is in the middle of one of the biggest celebrations of its life - the 20th anniversary of the great World Expo 88 that many say really put the city on the map.
The celebrations are a chance to relive the unique atmosphere and sense of wonder that Expo 88 created in Brisbane.
And if you weren’t around for the original event, the 20th anniversary celebrations will give you a taste of the times and an insight into why and how Expo changed Brisbanites lives. Read our Expo fast facts - who, what, when, where and more.
First up is a free community day of celebrations at South Bank on Saturday 10 May which includes the sights and sounds of World Expo 88, an 80s movie marathon, a memorabilia display and a spectacular fireworks display.
Relive Expos vaudeville entertainment program at the Suncorp Piazza, where you can enjoy a day-long variety show program.
Encompassing a number of different styles of entertainment from aerialists and African drumming to Aussie whip cracking the shows will capture the diverse entertainment that was on offer during the six-month-long cultural bonanza that was Expo 88.
In the evening two classic Australian bands, Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows and Mental As Anything that graced the stage at World Expo 88, return for a special encore performance.
Other highlights include the larger-than-life Expo 88 photographic display in the South Bank Harbour, which runs until 22 June 2008, and the self-guided Expo Trail.
